Millets are rich source of nutrients and fibre which makes it an interesting alternative to common grains.

As we are going back to millet culture I also started experimenting with millets.
As a beginner I started preparing my normal breakfast items using millets.And my latest experiment is an upma using millet.

I have added all available vegetables in this upma to make it more nutritious, tasty and colourful.

Let me share millet upma recipe here.

I have used foxtail millet(navane in kannada, thina in malayalam) to prepare this millet upma.


1 cup millet (washed and drained)
21/2 cup water
2 tablespoon oil
mustard seeds
1 medium carrot chopped
2-3 beans chopped
1 green chilly chopped
1/2 onion chopped
1 spring curry leaves
salt to taste


Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, let it crackle then add curry leaves and chopped onion. Saute untill onion becomes translucent then add sliced carrot, beans and green chilly. Add little salt in this stage which will help vegetables to fry easily and also allow it to absorb enough salt. Saute until vegetableas are half cooked. Add water then let it boil. Once water come to a full rolling boil reduce flame to medium-low then add washed drained millet. Add enough salt, close the pan and cook until all water is absorbed.

You can prepare this mllet upma as a healthy breakfast or evening snack. Coconut chutney is a very good combination with this upma.
